Nearly Famous Becton Debate Team
GOVERNMENT IS TOO BIG AND TOO IMPORTANT TO BE LEFT TO THE POLITICIANS. CHESTER BOWLES FORMER GOVERNOR OF CONNECTICUT & YALE GRADUATE
Founded in 1990, your Award Winning, Nearly Famous Becton Debate Team is a member of the 18 school Bergen County Debate League. The BCDL is a Policy Debate League which means we debate public policy questions over the course of the season. Two person teams argue in favor of their plan to fix the problem posed. Once that is done, the team changes sides and argues against their opponent’s plan as too complex, too expensive, or too vague. Some of the most important members of our team are our student judges who evaluate the debate they have just seen. Becton Debate works closely with the Carlstadt Public School to involve 7th and 8th graders in the program.
We also send delegations to Yale Model Congress (Fall, New Haven, CT) and Penn Model Congress (Spring, Philadelphia, PA) to compete in Federal Government simulations. Once we arrive at the conference, our delegates change into their Sunday Best and offer their bills in committee, just like the real, live Congress. Model Congress has been part of the Becton Debate program since 1993.
Debate is a great activity to list on your college transcripts, and many of our graduates have been accepted to Yale, Harvard, Penn, NYU, NJIT, Muhlenberg, George Washington University, The College of New Jersey, and Rutgers.
All Bectonites are welcome to join so they may "Meet Interesting People and Yell at Them!”
