Gifted and Talented

General Information

Overview & Selection Process:

The Becton Regional High School District's Gifted & Talented program is dedicated to nurturing students' potential. Through advanced curriculum and enriched learning experiences we motivate students to excel and reach their utmost potential. Gifted and talented education allows for the opportunity for students to enhance their potential through collaboration, innovation, and problem solving. We are proud to offer a program that not only challenges our students but also prepares them to lead and be contributing members of society.

Students enter the Gifted and Talented Program through self selection of a variety of honors and advanced placement course offerings. Students must meet the eligibility requirements for honors and/or advanced placement courses based on outstanding achievement, interest, and talent. Such achievement must be corroborated by student performance and data.

Policy & Procedure: The Board of Education recognizes its responsibility to identify gifted and talented students within the school district and to provide these students with appropriate instructional adaptations and services.  To that end, the Board directs each such student in the school district to be identified and offered an appropriate educational program and services.

For purposes of this Policy, “gifted and talented students” means students who possess or demonstrate high levels of ability, in one or more content areas, when compared to their chronological peers in the district and who require modification of their educational program if they are to achieve in accordance with their capabilities.

Courses include Advanced Placement (AP), Dual-Enrollment with college credit, Honors courses, a prestigious Career Exploration and Senior Internship program, and a wide range of challenging elective courses to further expand their skills. Any enrolled student who meets the criteria for each selected course may take Accelerated, Honors, Advanced Placement and/or elective classes. Each of these classes has its own entrance requirements, curriculum and assessment practices.

Programming:  In addition to Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, and Honors programs, Gifted and Talented students will be offered a variety of opportunities to match each student's needs, such as:

-Individualized Counseling

-Summer Advancement Courses at an accredited institution

Complaint Process:  An individual who believes the district has not complied with the provisions of N.J.S.A. 18A:35-34 et seq. may file a complaint with the Board of Education. The Board shall issue a decision, in writing, to affirm, reject, or modify the district’s action in the matter.  The individual may then file a petition of appeal of the Board’s written decision to the Commissioner of Education through the Office of Controversies and Disputes in accordance with N.J.S.A. 18A:6-9 and the procedures set forth in State Board of Education regulations.
