Meet The Assistant Principal
Mr. Bononno has been a proud member of the Becton Regional High School community since 1991. Before coming to Becton, Mr. Bononno was educated at William Paterson University, Clemson University in South Carolina, and later at the U.S. Sports Academy in Alabama.
He started his career as a History teacher and served as the Freshman and Sophomore Class Advisor as well as the Student Council Advisor. He began his coaching career as a JV Baseball Coach, transitioned to coaching football, and eventually took over as Head Football Coach in 1993. Continuing the tradition of excellence, he led the football team to numerous League and State Championships. As head coach, Mr. Bononno earned League, County, and State Coach of the Year honors as well as the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Coach of the Year. He served as the President of the Bergen County Football Association and Chairman of the Bergen County Football All-Star Game and also served on the State All-Star Game Executive Committee. Mr. Bononno continued his coaching career as the Head Girls Track Coach and later as the Head Boys Track Coach.
For 11 years, Mr. Bononno served as the Director of Athletics and Supervisor of Health and Physical Education. In this capacity, Mr. Bononno brought many county events to Becton such as the Boys and Girls Basketball County Jamboree, State Final basketball games and the District 15 Wrestling Tournament. Mr. Bononno was the Vice President of the Bergen County Athletic Directors Association for two years and became the President for another two. He ended his tenure as Athletic Director being named the NJIC Athletic Director of the Year. In 2014 his Becton peers honored him as BEA Teacher of the Year.
In 2019, Mr. Bononno earned the role of Assistant Principal and has focused on building new programs for the district such as the Wellness Program and Summer Experience. He believes in seeking holistic ways to help the students of Becton Regional High School. Understanding that student wellness is at the forefront of student behavior, he seeks solutions that achieve the most positive outcomes.
