October's Letter from Superintendent
Dear Parents/Guardians and Community Members:
The heat of late summer has passed and now it is finally beginning to feel like fall! We have had a successful start to the school year. The rollout of the Chromebooks to all grade levels now allows all of our students to have access to assignments and communication with their teachers through Google classroom. We hope that this initiative will assist in providing our students with continued quality education.
October 2, 2017 through October 6, 2017 is the “Week of Respect” and October 9, 2017 through October 13, 2017 is “School Violence Awareness Week”. “The Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act” requires that the week beginning with the first Monday in October be designated as a “Week of Respect” in New Jersey. In order to recognize the importance of character education, we are required to provide age appropriate instruction or activities focusing on the prevention of harassment, intimidation, or bullying (HIB). This year we are combining the two weeks with activities and speakers for our students. During the week of October 2-6, 2017, students will actively participate in anti-bullying activities such as wearing blue on Monday, October 2 nd , creating anti-bullying art posters, listening to anti-bullying announcements, working on specific teacher prepared anti-bullying lessons, and receiving anti-bullying bookmarks from the Becton Media Center.
The East Rutherford “Senior Prom” will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at the Homewood Suites, East Rutherford, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Our high school seniors love to participate in this great event and the yearly response we receive from the “Seniors” makes this a very special event.
The National Honor Society will be offering “Ketchup Sessions “during lunch in the Media Center beginning October 3, 2017 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The honor students will be offering help to those students in need of assistance with homework, classwork, and tutoring. This is a great opportunity for our students. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this offer.
The PSATs will be administered to all sophomores and juniors on October 11, 2017. Students will be tested during the school day. Please make sure that your children who are taking the test have a good night’s rest the evening before and a good breakfast the morning of the PSAT administration. In addition, on October 13, 2017, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office will be giving a presentation to our students through the Heroin and Opioid Initiative. Detectives from the Narcotics Task Force will be informing students of the dangers of heroin and opioid addiction as well as other gateway drugs. Becton Regional High School is dedicated to keeping our students informed of the many dangers of drug addiction.
On October 19, 2017, we will hold our annual “Open House”. This year we are once again inviting both the 7 th and 8 th grade students from the communities of Carlstadt and East Rutherford in order to highlight our beautiful facility and the exciting curriculum and activities that Becton Regional High School has to offer. The evening will begin at 6:30 pm in the Becton Performing Arts Center.
Our fall sports are all having exciting seasons. The students so appreciate all of their fans for their continued support!
