May's Letter from Superintendent
Dear Parents/Guardians and Community Members:
May has arrived! Today, May 1, 2018, is National Commitment Day. At Becton Regional High School, we celebrate the students who are attending college or joining the military. Students are requested to wear a college shirt or a shirt representing the branch of the military that they are joining. Photographs are taken of the students and they have an opportunity to celebrate with their fellow students learning about the different schools they will be attending. This year we are proud to announce that students are committing to colleges and universities such as Purdue, Georgetown, Notre Dame, San Diego, Rutgers, and many more. In addition, two of our seniors are joining the Army to serve our country. We are proud of all of you!
Tomorrow, May 1 st and Wednesday, May 2 nd , Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry students will be completing the math portion of the PARCC. From May 7 through May 17, students that are currently enrolled in Advanced Placement classes will be testing. Good luck to all of the students who will be participating. In addition, on May 22-23, 2018, juniors will be taking the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment for Science (NJSLA-S). Please make sure that your child receives proper rest and a good breakfast before all of these assessments.
Four of our art students will be participating in the Congressional Art Competition for photography and fine art. Their work will be on display at the George Segal Art Gallery of Montclair State University with winners from the 9 th District of New Jersey being announced at a reception on May 4 th at 6 pm.
May 8, 2018, is Teacher Appreciation Day. It is a day to say “thank you” to our teachers for working diligently with our students. We also honor our school nurses on May 9 th for all of the dedication and work they do for our students.
The week of May 13-19, 2018 is Special Education Week in New Jersey. The achievements of the state’s approximate 232,000 students with special needs and the dedicated work of their parents, teachers, and other school professionals will be recognized during this week. Also, during this week of May we will celebrate Multi-Cultural Week at Becton Regional High School. On May 14 th , Ambassadors from the countries of Spain, Mexico, and Turkey will be speaking to World Language students. In addition, on May 16, qualified students from the Spanish and Italian classes will be inducted into the Spanish and Italian Honor Societies. The induction ceremony will be held in the James Williams Performing Arts Center at 7:00 pm.
The Becton Regional High School Prom will be held on May 31, 2018 at The Tides in North Haledon, New Jersey. Please see our website for further information or contact Ms. Jessica O’Driscoll, the junior class advisor, at firstname.lastname@example.org . There will be half-day session for all students on May 31, 2018.
The spring sports programs are in full swing. The Baseball Team has just completed a five game winning streak winning three of those games by the 10-run rule. This year’s Girls Track Team has a 6-2 record that puts them in a great position to compete for the League Title. The Softball Team is currently five and eight for the season and five and four within the league. Please continue to come out and support our spring sports!
Memorial Day will be observed on Monday, May 28, 2018. School will be closed on this day to remember those service members who died while serving our country in the armed forces.
